Help close to home

Veteran services

Whatever brings you here, you do not have to figure it out alone.

What kind of help do you need?

Post 5036 can listen, help you identify a next step, and connect you with the right people. Professional claims and benefits help comes from the county, VA, and other qualified agencies. You do not need to join the VFW to ask where to start.

Want to speak with someone? Call the Kane County veterans office at 630 232 3550 during office hours, or email Post 5036 for help finding a direction.

If you need immediate crisis support, call 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line.

Benefits and claims

Need help with a VA claim or earned benefits?

Whether you are starting a disability claim, reviewing a decision, or looking into health care, a pension, education benefits, or a home loan, you can speak with people whose work is helping veterans navigate these systems.

Who helps: The Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission provides free help with benefit applications and claims. Its staff includes accredited benefits personnel. Post 5036 can connect you, but the county office provides the professional assistance.

Bring any service and claim documents you have, if available. Call first to ask what you need and make an appointment.

Financial or emergency help

Is an urgent need making daily life harder?

Tell us if you are facing an immediate money concern, food insecurity, unstable housing, trouble getting to care, or another urgent need. Post 5036 may be able to offer support through its relief work or help connect you with an appropriate agency. Assistance depends on the situation and available resources.

Who helps: Post 5036 can hear the need and discuss its relief programs. The Kane County veterans office also handles financial assistance for eligible veterans and can discuss transportation to local VA care.

County assistance and transportation have their own eligibility rules. Call the county office to check them before applying or arranging a ride.

For a housing emergency, call the VA National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877 424 3838, available around the clock. See VA housing help ↗ External VA website

Military records

Need a DD Form 214 or another service record?

A discharge document can help with benefits, membership, and other important requests. The National Archives is the source for copies of military service records and replacement medals. The Kane County veterans office can also help you understand which record you need.

Veterans and next of kin can usually request basic records without a fee. The National Archives may ask you to verify your identity when requesting records online.

Survivor and burial help

Planning a burial or caring for a family after a loss?

Families may have questions about survivor compensation, pensions, burial allowances, cemetery benefits, or memorial recognition. The VA explains these programs and decides eligibility. The Kane County veterans office can help families understand benefits and applications.

Eligibility and required documents vary by benefit. If a death has just occurred, ask the county office or VA what to gather before filing.

Someone to talk to

Start With Coffee.

You do not have to know what help you need, and you do not have to join the VFW. Come meet another veteran, talk about what is on your mind, or simply sit with people who understand service.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us what is going on.

You do not need the name of a program or an agency. Send Post 5036 a note, or come by for coffee. We can listen and help point you toward an appropriate next step. For benefits applications and claims, we will connect you with qualified assistance rather than act as your claims representative.
